Daystar Sills Saves the UN's "Gateway To The Millennium" Exhibit

The United Nations, New York, NY --

Daystar Sills comes to the rescue! On December 15th, 1999 the work of renowned Chinese artist Han Zhang Ma was selected for the climax of the United Nations' prestigious "Gateway To the Millennium" exhibit. A high-profile event, showcasing the talents of over twenty celebrated artists from around the world, "it was quite an honor to be asked to close the show," said UN representative Yishi Ling.

However, there was one, overarching challenge. Ma's exhibit was to consist of eighty of his monumental paintings, the largest of which is 40' X 10'. It was therefore necessary to design and construct a "labyrinth" of numerous large panels to support these enormous works. In addition to this, the panels needed to be erected in the main lobby of the United Nations --a high-traffic area, involving various issues of safety and security.

Ma's staff had originally contracted with a leading Manhattan art gallery to design the exhibit and implement its construction. Yet, because of communication problems with backers in Tian Jin, China, the Manhattan-based gallery was unable to complete the project on time or on budget. With less than a week to go, the exhibit's premiere was seriously threatened.

Enter Daystar Sills. Approached by one of its investment partners --a patron of the arts, who knew Daystar Sills' reputation for building quickly and efficiently, company President David N. Sills immediately mobilized his crack team of designers and subcontractors. Not only was Daystar Sills able to meet Ma's budget, it also completed the project in an unprecedented day and a half. (The Manhattan gallery's contractor had required eight days to erect the same construction.)

"Without Daystar Sills, there simply wouldn't have been an exhibit," said Ma Tian, Mr. Ma's wife and interpreter. The United Nations staff was equally impressed. "We appreciated their professionalism and flexibility in meeting our high safety standards," said UN Operations Coordinator, Fedor Diaz.

On December 15th, the exhibit premiered without a hitch, and leading dignitaries from around the world were able to enjoy the timeless works of Han Zhang Ma. For Ma and his staff, a potential disaster was avoided. For Daystar Sills, it was just another success story. The exhibit will run through January 15, 2000.
